“The Struggle is Real” Nike, My Own Struggles & Finding a Wild Adventure of your own... Just like Phil Knight, I am struggling. But, I need you to start struggling too, and here is why... All the good stuff happens in “The Struggle”. This blog and the thoughts and ideas in it are Inspired by one of my all time favorite books, "The Shoe Dog" - A Memoir by the creator of NIKE. --------- Have you ever heard of a guy named Phil Knight? If not, I’m sure you have heard of the shoe empire that he built. It also happens to be my personal favorite clothing and shoe brand, just a "little teensy tiny brand" ... called NIKE!!! ;) The Swoosh, Jordan & Tiger Nike has it all, the best athletes, the best ads, the best logo, the best branding, the best motto - "Just Do It," the best teams spanning the entire globe, all are wearing the "swoosh!" Most importantly they have JORDAN, my all time favorite athlete..sorry TIGER...you are great, but not quite JORDAN. Jordan is a brand of its own within the brand. And his "Jumpman" logo is just as iconic, maybe even more iconic than the Nike Swoosh. Today, Nike is everywhere you look, but it wasn’t always that way… The Early Struggle - Starting Phil Knight had a dream, and he started working on his dream. His dream was to create the “World’s Greatest Running Shoe” Phil started Nike from nothing, it wasn’t even called Nike at first. I’ll let you read the book to find out how Nike got its name. From nothing, he headed into his makeshift “shoe lab” aka garage and started getting to work. From his garage he emerged, like a mad scientist and he took his creation to the streets! He started out by hustling & selling shoes out of the trunk of his car at sporting events. But then it gets really interesting... The "Fun" Struggle - Winning From the garage to the streets to buying an outdated warehouse...Phil went on the most wild and crazy adventure that you can ever imagine. It was filled with the most interesting people and characters, misadventures, lots of human errors that are hilarious, and most importantly GENIUS IDEAS that were almost discovered on ACCIDENT. The End The end of the book is super cool, Phil has now "made it" he is "GOAT Status" and he bumps into Bill Gates at the movies. How funny! Different world for them, eh? But, I do like bumping into all you "rockstars" at the movies, target, restaurants and "out in the wild." Anyway, Phil is back home from the movies and is now laying in bed, winding down his day. He starts reflecting back on the wild and crazy, "Nike adventure". As he is pondering on this, it hit's him! It was the "struggle years" that he missed the most! He ends saying, "If I could, I would go back and do it all again! Because it was so fun" That's Crazy... But in a GOOD WAY Isn’t that nuts? That’s crazy, but in a good way…and HE is RIGHT! The Struggle is The Fun! Because, Winning is FUN! Being with your teammates is FUN! I hope you find your dream and have a wild adventure of your own... Find Your Own Struggle - It's Your Dream My advice to you would be this, “Embrace your weird” and find a dream worth being the “best in the world at.” Go out there in this crazy world and “Make your mistakes 110%”, my HS Football coach would always say to us. Your Future - Coaches are Fortune Tellers Here is what will happen, I guarantee it! I can see the future, I am a "fortune teller" ;) and YOUR FUTURE IS VERY BRIGHT! However, along the way you will struggle, you will make mistakes and the best part of all that struggling is that you will LEARN. But you must "STRUGGLE" and not "AVOID" the lessons. If you stay in the struggle, eventually this will happen to you: YOU WILL "LEARN to WIN!" Then, If you keep pursuing, keep struggling, keep learning, keep growing. Especially through all the "LOSSES". LOSSES are just LESSONS, if you have a GREAT ATTITUDE and can see it. You will then become UNSTOPPABLE like the best in the world, because they are the most mentally tough in the world. They see every mistake as an "opportunity", they see every loss as a "lesson", they act as if the absolute "worst things thrown at them" are just there to make them better. A coach once said, "Act as if everything that happens to you is in your best interest." Then someday, you will be the “Best in the World” at it. I think you are doing GREAT by the way. You are already a rockstar to me! You've got this and I’ve got your back. -Coach Holen 651-216-4539 PS: Here is my Dream: I’m on a journey to be the “World’s best Coach.” By best I mean, most positive, most encouraging and most IMPACTFUL.
